The department is responsible for the following:
- Administering the standardization work all over Sierra Leone.
- Implementing the laws and regulations on standardization.
- Unifying the operation procedures of standards development.
- Coordinating and administering national technical committee on standardization.
- Organizing the development of national standards: planning, examination, numbering, issuance and publication.
- Liaising with international organizations that are involved in standardization such as ISO, ARSO, IEC, CODEX etc.
Standards can be used as the technical basis for trade in end-products and services between willing buyers and sellers, or a means of facilitating compliance to technical regulations. Also, they are used extensively by companies in production, products, service and process environments. Standards are developed by a transparent, open and consensus based process, involving interested stakeholders, and define fitness for purpose in the case of standards for products, and good practice.
Thus, Management System Standards assist organizations in the management of their operations. The widespread use of standards is a necessary precursor to the evolution of a culture o quality in society. Consequently, the number of national standards developed, or base on regional/international standards, which is often used as a “yardstick” measure.
Standardization involves the development and provision of standards, and the supply of information on standards to interested parties, and takes place on various levels. Also, Standardization involves the development and publication of a formal document by a recognized body, generally by consensus, containing the requirements that a product, process or service should comply with. Standards are developed on a number of levels, namely:
- International standards
- Regional standards
- National standards
- Private standards
